The MBTA and Me and Staying On Track

So a new chapter in my life has begun this week!  I turned 54 (!!!) a few weeks ago and so –at this point in my life- I oddly seem to have a LOT of new chapters! *grin*  Luckily, many of them are of my own orchestration, but this week’s was a change in my work environs.  My company (I’ve been there for 6+ years) moved from a nearby suburban location to right-smack-dab in the middle of downtown Boston. (Cue “Ch-ch-ch-changes” music here, please!)

April, 2012 and up to 205 lbs. NOT GOOD!
My last ‘new chapter” began when I moved in January and I did that knowing that the quaint historic town I moved to was on the commuter line to Boston. Since that move in January, I have, blog-wise at least, been fairly “quiet”.  Right around Christmas time I came down with the flu (2 weeks before my move) and it then turned into one of the worst winters I have had as an asthmatic in a very long time.  I was ON prednisone more than I was off of it (prednisone is a steroid that helps reduce asthmatic inflammation) and, consequently, gained nearly 25 pounds since the New Year. TWENTY FIVE!

It took me weeks and weeks to wrap my mind around what was happening in the midst of it happening!  I exercised only intermittently and, when I did, I was out of breath and felt out of shape. It takes a long time and a lot of hard work to get into shape but it takes a relatively short time of no exercise or activity to lose the muscle tone and advantage you'd worked so hard for!  BLAH!  I went to a specialist in April and was given massive doses of antibiotics which finally knocked the chest infection out of my system.  By mid-May I began walking regularly again  - then considered a personal trainer – decided against it (I do KNOW what to do!) and rejoined the YMCA.

My energy has returned but I am certainly feeling the effects of the additional weight. There is a shame attached to the gain, too, of course, as I feel a bit of a fraud. : (  "Healthy (??) Gaining Gal" I considered using as an interim Twitter name.

Two summers ago when Geneen Roth's Women, Food & God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything was all the rage, I tried to love it (like everyone else seemed to) but I just couldn't get into it and finally gave up and put it down.

Three weeks ago I picked up the book again and was fairly sure my yellow highlighter would run out of ink before I'd gotten all the way through it! This time, I *ABSORBED* every word and Geneen Roth's lessons and words seemed directed specifically to me. I so identified with the verse below that I exclaimed, "YES!" at the little beach I was sitting and reading at - - loudly enough to turn a few heads in amusement.

"Compulsive eating is a way we leave ourselves when life gets hard. Its a way we distance ourselves from the way things are when they are not how we want them to be."   "It* is about the capacity to stay in the present moment.:"  *Ending the obsession with food.

Leaving North Station on the MBTA Train
So this new chapter I'm embarking on really isn't about riding the MBTA commuter rail an hour to and from the new office daily - although, that, too, is new - it is about embracing the continued challenge to do whatever it takes, despite the obstacles life may lay across your tracks, to stay in the present moment and get on with getting healthy. Oh! And losing weight! : )

I remain, therefore, Healthy Loser Gal!

Thanks for hanging in with me and supporting me, and - mostly - inspiring me!  I'm so grateful for you all.

Here's to our health, friends!

Let's all strive for this in our lives...

May Move It Challenge

Last night I recalled a playground song from when I was a kid in upstate New York. The person in the middle of the skipping circle had to jump around and/or dance wildly as everyone sang:

"Shake it! Shake it! Shake it!
Shake it if you can,
And if you cannot shake it,
Do the best you can!"

And then the person in the middle (yes, that's me in the middle of the photo on my 10th birthday! lol) would twirl around and around and finally stop and point to the next person as we sang:

"So round and round and round she goes, where she stops, nobody knows!"

I'm struck by "If you cannot shake it, do the best you can!"  I kind of love that line! : )  It says to me that we're not expecting you to be perfect... but, hey! Just do the best you can!  Get out there in the middle of the circle of life (cue Lion King music...) and shake it as best as you know how!

And that, my friends, is what the theme of the May Move It Challenge is going to be.  Move it.. shake it... get out there and do it!

You've got to try something different this month, you've got to get up and out of your comfort zone and "shake it! shake it! shake it"... or in other words, let's 'move it to lose it'!

Why are you sitting at home in front of the t.v. for a few hours every night?  Couldn't you be out for a walk by yourself or tossing the frisbee with your kid?  How about remembering that favorite activity that you 'used to do' and trying it again?  The May Move It challenge is about baby steps to get you out there ready to make giant steps for your health and fitness.

This is going to be a very simple challenge.  I'm going to ask you (and myself) to commit to 30 minutes a day of movement five times a week.  If you really want to challenge yourself you'll realize that we're already 3 days into the month and count these past days as your "days off", committing to 30 minutes of movement for the next 27 days of May.

I'm going to be walking every day but you can do whatever you  wish so long as you're moving your body for 30 minutes daily five days a week.  Who is with me? :)

Remember... if you cannot shake it, just do the best you can!

Here's to our health!

In pursuit of personal forgiveness...

I have so much to say this evening but know I don't have the time to blog EVERYTHING I want to tell you, so - for this evening - let me break the barrier of having been away and the extreme guilt of that and ask for you all to forgive my absence.  The last month to six weeks has been extremely hard for me on many personal levels and I have - I believe - finally, this past weekend, found my footing again, reclaimed my balance and am ready to forgive my own failings, accept I don't always make the best choices, and move on.  More on this later this week - possibly tomorrow night.

But... meanwhile... this evening, I want to introduce you to a site that approached me in the beginning of March - just as we were beginning March Back To Basics Challenge - and asked me to review their site.  MyYogaOnline is inspirational.  I feel blessed they asked me to blog and review their offering because in the limited time I have spent on the site, I have learned so much and have been offered so many new ideas.  I feel like I was introduced to the site at exactly the time in my life I needed a little 'slow down, breathe, and concentrate on your breathing'.  (Cue the Law of Attraction music here, please!) ; )

Need new exercise routines to try?  How about a Bollywood Dance Workout?  Feeling totally stressed out from work or travel... take the time to unwind to the beautiful Turbo Meditation for Peace.  New to yoga and the terminology and poses and overall basics... everything is explained in detail and the basic routines are thoroughly explained.  If you are not new to yoga, I believe you'll find the offerings on MyYogaOnline to stimulate and challenge you (if that is what you're looking for) and will offer you deeper knowledge of how to use yoga fundamentals in your daily life.  As a woman (ahem... 'over 40'), I appreciate the individualized videos for those of us looking to deal with possible new challenges of aging and female issues.

I urge you to check out the site.  I have four two week passes to give away to those of you who believe you'll benefit from the site's offerings. (I can't, honestly, imagine any one who wouldn't.) To be eligible for the two week pass to the MyYogaOnline site, please follow them on Twitter and/or Facebook and leave me a comment here with a way (Twitter, email are best) to get in touch with you.

One belated giveaway to announce:  I would like to congratulate a March Back to Basics challenge, @Elle_Bizzle, who did an incredible job on Back to Basics in March having lost 10+ pounds and checking in nearly daily with those of us on the #hlgB2B challenge.  Her enthusiasm helped inspire others and, for that gift, she is receiving a 1 year Premium Unlimited Membership pass to MyYogaOnline.  Enjoy it, my friend, it is well deserved and you're going to love their site! : )

Trying to make sense of it all...

I have to say that yesterday was the first time in my life I didn't feel like celebrating Saint Patrick's Day.  I'd lost a colleague and beautiful, young friend to bile duct cancer this past week.  We all thought - since she'd fought so valiantly 18 months ago and seemed to kick cancer's butt - that when she went into the hospital in late January that she would be victorious again.  This time it wasn't to be the case and she died on Wednesday morning.  I'll miss her sparkling smile and delight in life.  Her twitter profile ends with "living life to the fullest fo sho!"  She was engaged last summer to her wonderful fiance and seeing him wracked with pain and grief yesterday at the services was almost too much to bear.  I have been a little mad at the universe to say the least.

This morning I woke up after a night of tossing and turning and pretty awful dreams deciding to do what I can to live my own life to the fullest "fo sho"!  I've been saying I was going to explore my new community a little more and decided that today would be another day for that... getting up to go to the local "diner" on my own.  I don't like to go to places on my own oh-solo-mio but in I waltzed and asked for the final seat on the stools. The place was packed (a good sign) and people were waiting outside.

Dave's Diner in Westford is adorable... clean, and bright.  Photos on the walls are 8x10s of where people have worn the diner's t-shirts around the world. The waitresses are friendly, just attentive enough to be helpful but not so much so that you feel like you're rushed so the next group can sit down.  And... the food was delicious.  I ate half of my plate which was more than enough... well, I ate both eggs! *grin*

And then I walked down the little plaza sidewalk and had my nails done for the first time since moving in.  Good heavens that was so needed!

From there I drove the 20 miles to the YMCA and rejoined.  The Waltham YMCA has remodeled and brought in new equipment.  I was duly impressed and jumped on a treadmill and did a couple of quick miles.  It felt good to be 'back'.  Back to basics.  Back to what I KNOW works for me.

I feel like I've made some good choices the rest of the day.  Planned my food for the week.  Didn't make things too complicated.  Just things I know I like, know the calories and fat grams for, and will continue to measure my portions all week... just to be safe.

I'll be back at the Y during the week... during the work week I can go over at few times at lunch and then a few nights after work before I head home.  I have so much coming up in the next six months, I need and want to be in the best shape I can be.  I *owe* that to myself... fo sho!

Setting SMART Weight Loss Goals

FROM 2 YEARS AGO, BUT SO PERTINENT FOR NOW!

So my vacation is over and I had a great time visiting my sister in Florida.  We hadn't seen one another in a year and a half so it was long overdue.  I'm proud to say I stayed completely on plan - even counted calories on St. Patrick's Day for Guinness (I don't like it but feel obligated to drink it on St. Patrick's Day as I am, afterall, of Irish descent!) and corn beef & cabbage & bangers & mash.  I made wise, thought-out choices of airport food and even made certain I was online on Tuesday night for my Vtrim class.  And I'm soooo glad I made time for the class as it was all about one of my favorite things in the world this past year:  Making Goals!

Not just any goals...

Sure, my goal a year ago was to lose 100 lbs. but - in all honesty - that wasn't a very realistic goal as I had no idea how I was going to do it nor was I a contestant on The Biggest Loser! *grin*  Losing 60 pounds in a year was much more attainable for me but I would have been happy with 50 pounds,  honestly, as in June I was stagnant at 35!  It was only then that I started breaking down my goal(s) into 5 pounds lost at a time... THEN it began to work! Then I was making smart goals!

Now, with the help of the Vtrim classes and exercising at the YMCA, I'm learning what is a SMART goal for me now.  This week coming up, for instance, I committed to myself and my fellow classmates that I would have the following goal:

I will walk (specific) for a mile (measurable & achievable) on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday (time limited) and then try something new for exercise that I haven't done before for 30 mins on Thursday (realistic)

Now, for many of you, that goal may seem easy-peasy, huh?  But - for me - it is achievable and just enough out of my comfort zone to make it a true goal.  I'm not setting myself up for failure.  I've already walked the Saturday and Sunday portion of the goal and know I can get to the YMCA at lunch hour on Tuesday.  The Thursday part I'm not sure of what I'll do... but I'm going to do it!

I learned in the online class that we need to ask ourselves "what hurdles do I need to overcome to lose weight?” and then use the smart guidelines to set 1-2 goals a week to help get over those weight loss hurdles. It makes such sense when it is pared down into smaller, achievable goals and I, personally, like writing the goals on my calendar and checking them off when they're completed!!

Between Friday and today, I have walked six miles.  SIX MILES!  That is a record for me over a weekend except when I did the five mile walk back in the fall, but that was with a few stops along the way.  This was really power waking (well... a 17-20 minute mile is power walking for this gal!) and I walked with a determined gait!  I built my first ever play list for my iPod and hit the pavement and LOVED IT!  And I felt incredible... empowered... thankful... full of LIFE! :)

This morning I got up (sore as sore can be because of my second meeting with my trainer yesterday- this week we did not continue assessing!!) and got on the scale and I am at the lowest weight I have been in about 8 years!  I pushed the scale around the bathroom floor... and every place I stepped on it, I was at the same weight.  It wasn't a fluke... I'm DOING this! :)

BRING IT ON WORLD, YEAR TWO OF MY JOURNEY HAS JUST STARTED & I'VE GOT YOUR NUMBER!

More tomorrow night on my first real encounter with personal training!  Parker (my trainer at the YMCA) said "remember this day, Jan, because in a month you will look back and see how very far you've come".

Oh, Klout! Why must you toy with me?!

For nearly two months I could not access Klout. Nope.  I could get onto the site but everything was blank with the exception of the top grey search bar and menu so that I could see my Klout score slowly but surely drop and drop and drop. LOL  And I *like* Klout so was feeling badly that I couldn't get on.  I've gotten some very cool Perks from the site.  I finally decided to install Google Chrome on my home PC and voila!  Klout works for me again.  And what do I see when I look at the Weight Loss Influencers section? A quote from me about the Back to Basics challenge!!   You're toyin' with me, Klout... must you be so 'in my face' about it? : )

Just had to 'share'!

Thank you, Susan Branch!

I have been a fan of Susan Branch for years and years!  That makes her sound old (lol), but she isn't - - she's just a really talented artist, author, and cook and general lover of vintage materials and kitchenware and all the same kind of things that I love.

Susan's "Heart of the Home" cookbook is often what I give at bridal showers and my own copy was so well worn and splotched up with kitchen ingredients that I recently replaced it.  :)  I give her calendars as holiday gifts and they adorn my own  home, my "A little birdie told me" pen is my favorite pen to journal with (you know, the old fashioned journal... pen to paper!).  So, yup! I'm a bonafide Susan Branch fan.

A few years ago I began to follow her on Twitter and discovered she is every bit as sweet tweeting as I knew she would be. So... imagine my delight when I found out last month that this blog was included in Susan's website's "Inspiration" Blog Roll.  I was like a wide-eyed kid who'd just been told by their heroine (again, she's not much older than me! lol) that she'd "done well"! :)   THANK YOU, SUSAN, for all the happiness you bring into my life through your artwork and your books and sundries and for honoring me by including me in your list.  There are so many incredible blogs and sites on this list... I encourage everyone to make a nice mug of tea or pour yourself a glass of wine and peruse the sites, linger over them and enjoy Susan Branch's site as well as all of those on her list! :)

Signed... *beaming with happiness*
A devoted fan

PS: All the artwork in this post is, of course, the delightful work of Susan Branch! Isn't she great?! :)

Back to Basics: Measuring & Water Guzzling :)

I'm a boring breakfast person 90 percent of the time because I tend to eat what I know is 1) good for me 2) works in my daily calories and fat gram plan and 3) is EASY!  So... voila... this morning I actually measured out my 2/3 cup of fat free Vanilla yogurt (I like Dannons Light & Fit), 10 fresh raspberries, and 1/4 cup of Kashi's GoLean Crunch.  And, since I was working from home today, I mixed and ate it right from the measuring cup! *grin*

Food scales don't need to be expensive. But they ARE important!  I've had my handy little food scale that cost less than $10 for a couple of years and it works wonderfully!  It has a 'zero out' button that allows me to put a bowl on the scale, hit the 'zero out' and then add the food so I don't have to worry about subtracting the bowl's weight from the total.  Who needs to be doing math more than counting calories? lol   An example of how I use it was for today's soup & sandwich lunch... I measured out 2.5 oz of lean ham to add to my 100 calorie Flatout Bread Rosemary & Olive Oil Foldit.  Have you tried these yet? Oh good heavens they are 100 calories of delicious!  I'm going to try to get the company to send us some coupons to giveaway! ;)

I've been running up and down my stairs today at home doing the 100 oz of water. I'm usually at the office and the ladies room is right down the hall!  For me, I use the half your body weight rule when drinking water.  So if you weight 220 lbs., try to get in 110 oz of water.  That's a lot of water and you're going to be seeing your ladies room often, but it is worth it. If you weigh 110 lbs, though, you should aim for 64 oz daily, that's the standard.

Also, take a close look at your water bottles and take the time to measure your different sizes of water glasses.  I thought, for the longest time, that the glass in this photo held 1/2 cup of water.  It holds 8 oz. A full cup.  Whoops.  And the water bottle in my photo when filled to the top is 32 oz even though the measurement on the side shows 24 ounces of water.  So know your 'vessels'! :)  Also, I keep my Brita water bottle filled and on the counter rather than in the frig.  Makes it easier to grab and a great visual reminder to Drink Up! :)

Not too late to join the March Back to Basic Challenge, friends... just let me know if you're "in"! Thanks for everyone joining through comments and on Twitter and Facebook! : )

Let's Get Back to Basics!

I have an admission to make... I have been slacking since December.  "Slacking" as in I've only been exercising sporadically, I've barely logged my food, and my walking is way way down from where it should be.  What's my excuse?  Oh, ya know... I have plenty of them that I feed my own self-criticism.  "I've been so busy with moving!", "I've been sick all winter and the prednisone is adding water weight.", "There has been so much tragedy in my family this winter"... and on and on.  And, yup - they're all valid if I want to be someone who can't even be honest with my own self and needs to make excuses.  But that is BULL!  I am dedicated to reclaiming myself and being the best I can be.  I slipped off track for a few months.  Now I'm back and feel the commitment again and am ready to get back at it by building on the basics of weight loss and fitness that I *KNOW* work for me.

I'm going to have another challenge this month and I'd like to have you join me.  Back to Basics Challenge.  That is it. Nothing fancy. No gimmicks. No weight loss pills or magic potions.  Just dedication.  Dedication to 1) self-discipline, 2) planning your food to equal the calories you want to consume daily  3) measuring and weighing your food  4) journaling each and every bite you take 5) drinking 1/2 your body weight in water daily 6) 20 minutes of exercise 4x week (and, for me... walking daily at least two miles and more when and if I can).

I'll repeat the challenge parts:

Self-discipline.  If I say I'm going to get up at 7am to walk, I'm not going to let myself down and turn over in bed.  Self-discipline is the key to leading a successful life.  As a morbidly obese person I was also so incredibly lacking in self-discipline it wasn't even funny.  It was pathetic. I was pathetic.  I refuse to be that any longer because of how horrible it made me feel about myself.  Now, when I make a promise to myself, I'm going to keep it.  So... number one and the most important part of the Back to Basics challenge is:  Self Discipline

Plan out your calories and your daily food.  If you cannot plan ahead for the week, at least plan out your day at the beginning so when the office surprise party at 4pm happens, you know whether or not you have the calories left to have that one cookie for 200 calories.  You don't have to be perfect every single day and you shouldn't feel like you're depriving yourself, but you do need to stay close to what you set as the right calories for trying to lose weight.  Remember, as the Vtrim Online program finally taught me a few years ago... 3500 calories = 1 lb.  If I want to lose 2 lbs per week, I'm going to have to cut out or exercise off 7000 calories. (It is easier than it may sound!)

You're going to be surprised at what one serving is if you haven't measured food before.  My guess is the majority of us are doubling our portion sizes and thinking it equals one serving size or one portion.  That bottle of iced tea you're picking up at the convenient store on your way to pick up the kids at soccer... the one you glanced at the nutritional label and saw it said 180 and you thought "oh, that's not too bad"?  That bottle is 2 and 1/2 servings and you just drank about a third of your daily calories. Ut oh!  That piece of skinless chicken you're about to toss on the grill and are feeling all proud about?  That's not 6oz of lean white meat... that is 10 oz and you just nearly doubled what you thought your evening calories were.  Back to basics: buy a small food scale (they're inexpensive) and get out your measuring cups, read every nutritional label and check calories and fat grams... measure & weigh your food.

Journal (write down wherever is convenient for you) and log every bite you eat as quickly as you can.  This is so easy to do in our tech driven lives.  iPhones, Androids, online journals, a pad of paper, apps on the internet, Twitter, Facebook.... doesn't matter where.  Just keep track because as the day goes on and it gets to be 11pm at night and you're just THEN logging your food for the day, if you're like me, you're going to forget that you had that banana at mid-day or that hot chocolate in the morning.

Here are two of my favorite online sites for logging and food planning: FitDay and MyPlate.  If you could share your favorites with everyone in the comments, that would be terrific.  I also journal my exercise because it makes my self-esteem rise daily when I see my exercise increasing.  I make comments, too, about how I'm feeling because I've found it helpful to go back and read how I was at a specific time of the month or a year later.  (November, I have found, is a great month for me... January is historically for me just awful!)

Water intake is key to every part of your body.  By the time you are thirsty, you're already dehydrated. When you're on a weight loss journey, think of water as your best friend.  I try to drink 1/2 my body weight in water daily.  I don't always get there, but I often do.  I make this easy for myself by keeping four water bottles: one in my car, one at my office, one in my kitchen, one in my bedroom.  The car water bottle goes to the gym or on walks with me.  The office water bottle is the one I use the most.  I was given a couple of great water bottles through blogging events but I highly suggest you invest in a water bottle or two that you will like and use.  Two of mine have designs that I love and the other two are plain.  DRINK WATER = you can't get any more basic than that! : )

My Yoga Online co-founder Michelle Trantina, courtesy of My Yoga Online

Exercise 20 minutes four times a week.  That is the challenge bar to try to attain.  Twenty minutes a day of SOME SORT OF MOVEMENT!  Take the stairs, try online yoga, do a Chris Freytag DVD, WiiFit routine, riding your bike, walking your dog at a brisk pace... it doesn't matter.  Just get moving to the point where you begin to be aware of your heart beat increasing and you're breaking or about to break a sweat. That's when the magic begins to happen. You HAVE to move it to lose it.  There is no magic pill.  There is no "Wishing Away the Pounds" diet out there.  This is all about healthy, long term, lifestyle change.  I'm going to do the 20 minutes three times a week, too, and will be posting here on the blog during March what I'm doing - even with pictures of my own red face when getting my workout on! : )  For me, the big thing is to begin walking again - daily walking.  And that starts tomorrow morning.  No excuses.  If you want to walk along with me this month, I would love that!  Try to get 20 days of exercise in during March and take only 11 days off.  I *know* you can do that even if you're morbidly obese. Start slow and gradually work up to 20 minutes all at once. Wait until you do 20 minutes all at the same time... you're going to feel so good about yourself! ; )

The month of March can be YOUR month!  It is going to be mine, so let's make it "our month"!  The month when you exercise your self-discipline muscle and commit to yourself to begin (or continue on) the journey to reclaim your health and wellness.  I *know* you can do this if I can do this.  Together we will support each other all month.  Someone on Twitter asked me if I'd be willing to talk with them on the phone or on Skype if they began to get discouraged.  Easy answer:  Yes.  If you guys would like to do a Skype call all together or get into a chat on Twitter all together one evening, of course we can do that!

We're worth this effort.  We're going to be SO proud of ourselves this month.  We're going to go into March like a LION and end March like a LION.  Back to basics, baby!  Who is "in"?  Leave me a comment and let me know! : )

A Valentine Goodbye Kiss...

... to The Biggest Loser Season 13 remaining shows.

I have been contemplating all week whether or not to continue watching this season's shows and I've finally decided to give up on the eye rolling (Bob Harper, really?!?) and the ridiculous claims to 'my workout routine' (again, really Bob?!) and all the negativity!  Does Bob own every fitness move and someone forgot to tell the rest of the world... isn't this show supposed to be about people getting fit and reclaiming themselves through The Biggest Loser, not some personal concern that Bob has that Dolvett Quince may be training people with similar or even JUST THE SAME workout regimes and then worsening the situation by letting the people he (Bob) is training on the black team see his hostility? What happened to your tai chi and yoga balance in that workout, Mr. Harper?

But that was just the beginning of it for me.  I watch the show to be inspired and to feel some connection with the contestants that are on the ranch.  I enjoy rooting for them and laughing with my Twitter friends on Tuesday nights about the foibles and the remarkable things they're accomplishing.  I watch the 'last workout' segments intensely to see if I can find new moves to incorporate into my hours in the gym.

I *loved* last season's contestants.  Even the older woman who cried continually (Bonnie) and I felt, unfairly, blamed Ana for her own downfalls and giving up, was annoying to me but not unlikable.  I routed for both teams, for young and old and loved the season and was inspired by it.  I was, honestly, disappointed tremendously when John won over some of the other finalists but was more upset when he didn't give Dolvett the credit he had due him as the winning trainer.  Vinny, Ramon, Courtney, Jennifer, Jessica, Sunny, Becki, Antone, Joe and so many more made last season SO enjoyable and inspirational to watch from the 1st week to the finale.

This season has had people decide they just want to go home.  No real reason other than they miss their family and want to go.  Do they have any idea how many people would have cut off a finger (an arm probably isn't realistic... lol) to be in their spot on the ranch?  And Ms. Conda thinking she is not able to give one of the trainers (Dolvett) the respect he deserves and give him back talk in front of both teams during final workout?!  Are you kidding me?

And so many other things from the past weeks... I just don't feel uplifted by the show this season.  Quite the opposite, I feel dragged down when I turn off the television. When someone begins wearing an ascot to personally promote their own ventures (non-profit or not), I think that is just weird.  An ascot with a t-shirt... and the producers said 'okay' to that?

So, my decision - as much as I love the camaraderie of Twitter #BL friends on Tuesday nights and seeing Dolvett's enigmatic smile -  I'm giving up. Turn off  my elimination room frig-light... Healthy Loser Gal has left the building for the remainder of this season!

Let me know if you feel the same way or if you think it is editing, forced conflict, etc. that has made this season of The Biggest Loser seem so different by leaving a comment.  Thanks! ; )

January 20 for 20 Gaiam TV Fitness Winner is...

Fiona Hematoma @FionaHematoma!  This Philly native is now living in Arkansas and I am so glad she won because Fiona faithfully checked in on Twitter during the 20 days of the challenge and did all sorts of exercise, from hitting the gym for the elliptical and treadmill to walking her dogs to lacing up the skates of one type for ice hockey and the other type for roller derby.  CONGRATS!! (Fiona, please send me your mailing address through DM on Twitter!)

The folks at Gaiam.tv will be sending Fiona their Fitness basket with (this is just a partial list!) a gym bag, Pilates toning ring, pedometer, balance ball and resistance cords!  MANY THANKS to Gaiam.tv for this tremendous giveaway for the HealthyLoserGal January 20 minutes for 20 days challenge.

If you haven't checked out Gaiam.tv, please take some time to do so.  Their site is awesome and - in my humble opinion - well worth the minimal monthly membership fee because of the diversity of programs offered. : )

Thank you to ALL of the 20for20 challengers... you all inspired ME to keep active all 20 days in the midst of a hectic and very busy month for me!  Thanks for that! :)

Inspiration: Instructions for Life

While this list was first published in 2006 by The Dalai Lama, it is timeless in the message.  I've printed it out and plan to put it in MANY places around my home and office.  I hope you'll enjoy the inspiration as much as I have in reading it.

20 Ways to Get Good Karma

Instructions for Life by The Dalai Lama

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three R’s:

    - Respect for self,

    - Respect for others and

    - Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.

7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

19. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.

20. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

January Challenge: 20 for 20

So we're already ten days into 2012... and I hope that the year is off to a terrific start for you.  I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the changes I'm making and have decided there is nothing like a good challenge to make me feel like I can do anything! [Que memories of reading Supergirl Adventure Comics at the beach when I was a kid...]

For the next 20 days in a row (no breaks for good behavior this month... the first 10 days were all the break we should have needed) I challenge you to join me in twenty minutes a day of some sort of workout.  You can - of course - exceed the 20 minutes per day but to be in the 20 for 20 (or #hlg20for20) you need to commit to twenty minutes of moving / exercise for the remaining 20 days of January.

This January Healthy Loser Gal challenge is about two things... self-discipline and starting the year off with a healthy attitude.  Everyone of us can find 20 minutes in our days to have the self-discipline to commit to exercise, walking or just moving it to lose it!  You could just do exercises during the commercial breaks of an hour television show and you'd have nearly 20 minutes in!

I'm a huge fan of walking so I'm going back to my morning walks before work once I'm in my new home as of Sunday.  And I'm going to add the extra challenge of the 20 minutes of exercise for 20 days to that.

Are you in? : ) I think this is an easy, fun challenge and I hope to hear what your 20 minutes per day will take the shape of.  If you need some help with ideas for the next 20 days, I've put together a list of online resources from sites I trust and that I believe will inspire and motivate you.

Do you know about GaiamTV.com? This is a WONDERFUL site that has an incredibly diverse selection of streaming exercise routines available for a low monthly subscription fee.  GaiamTV features Yoga Studio, Fitness Studio, Wellness Center, Spirituality, Metaphysics, and much more.  You're going to recognize many of their instructors, too!

Some of the GaiamTV instructors
During this 20 for 20 Challenge, I've teamed up with GaiamTV.com to offer one OUTSTANDING Fitness themed gift basket to one of the 20 for 20 Challengers. That, alone, should encourage all of us to exercise for 20 days straight for 20 minutes so you can be in on the fantastic giveaway from GaiamTV on January 31st! :)

Other inspirations:
Dr. Oz' "You on a Diet" has a companion workout section on the RealAge site.  Check out the workouts here for 20 minutes of beginning exercises to help you feel good about challenging yourself to 20 minutes for 20 days!

Women's Health Magazine Fat Burning
I am a huge fan of FITNESS Magazine and their 20 minute express workouts feature something for everyone.  Check out the ultimate lunch workout slide show!

Do you love Joel Harper workouts?  Well, apparently Dr. Oz does as he features @JoelHarperFit (NYC trainer extraordinaire and no relation to our beloved Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser!) in this 20 minute workout to blast away fat!  (Yes, please!)  Also search Joel Harper on YouTube and find some great workouts there.

Want 20 minutes of intensity that you're going to feel the next day?  Try Women's Health Magazine's Lose Belly Fat: 20-Minute Fat-Burning Workout. The next day, as you recover, you may want to opt in for the 20 minute walk (read the info carefully and make certain you're fit enough to do high-intensity workouts... it is good to push your comfort zone a little bit but not good to hurt yourself if you're just starting to exercise).

Let me know on Twitter (@HealthyLoserGal) or on Facebook (HealthyLoser Gal or page: Healthy Loser Gal) or by commenting here if you're part of the January 20 for 20 Challenge, friends. If you want to be in on the GaiamTV.com giveaway, please follow @Gaiam on Twitter or GaiamTV on Facebook.

C'mon and join me... let's make January a healthy, I'm-proud-of-what-I'm-doing kind of month! :)
