A Valentine Goodbye Kiss...

... to The Biggest Loser Season 13 remaining shows.

I have been contemplating all week whether or not to continue watching this season's shows and I've finally decided to give up on the eye rolling (Bob Harper, really?!?) and the ridiculous claims to 'my workout routine' (again, really Bob?!) and all the negativity!  Does Bob own every fitness move and someone forgot to tell the rest of the world... isn't this show supposed to be about people getting fit and reclaiming themselves through The Biggest Loser, not some personal concern that Bob has that Dolvett Quince may be training people with similar or even JUST THE SAME workout regimes and then worsening the situation by letting the people he (Bob) is training on the black team see his hostility? What happened to your tai chi and yoga balance in that workout, Mr. Harper?

But that was just the beginning of it for me.  I watch the show to be inspired and to feel some connection with the contestants that are on the ranch.  I enjoy rooting for them and laughing with my Twitter friends on Tuesday nights about the foibles and the remarkable things they're accomplishing.  I watch the 'last workout' segments intensely to see if I can find new moves to incorporate into my hours in the gym.

I *loved* last season's contestants.  Even the older woman who cried continually (Bonnie) and I felt, unfairly, blamed Ana for her own downfalls and giving up, was annoying to me but not unlikable.  I routed for both teams, for young and old and loved the season and was inspired by it.  I was, honestly, disappointed tremendously when John won over some of the other finalists but was more upset when he didn't give Dolvett the credit he had due him as the winning trainer.  Vinny, Ramon, Courtney, Jennifer, Jessica, Sunny, Becki, Antone, Joe and so many more made last season SO enjoyable and inspirational to watch from the 1st week to the finale.

This season has had people decide they just want to go home.  No real reason other than they miss their family and want to go.  Do they have any idea how many people would have cut off a finger (an arm probably isn't realistic... lol) to be in their spot on the ranch?  And Ms. Conda thinking she is not able to give one of the trainers (Dolvett) the respect he deserves and give him back talk in front of both teams during final workout?!  Are you kidding me?

And so many other things from the past weeks... I just don't feel uplifted by the show this season.  Quite the opposite, I feel dragged down when I turn off the television. When someone begins wearing an ascot to personally promote their own ventures (non-profit or not), I think that is just weird.  An ascot with a t-shirt... and the producers said 'okay' to that?

So, my decision - as much as I love the camaraderie of Twitter #BL friends on Tuesday nights and seeing Dolvett's enigmatic smile -  I'm giving up. Turn off  my elimination room frig-light... Healthy Loser Gal has left the building for the remainder of this season!

Let me know if you feel the same way or if you think it is editing, forced conflict, etc. that has made this season of The Biggest Loser seem so different by leaving a comment.  Thanks! ; )

Here's to our health, friends!

Make RESULTS, Not Excuses!

I absolutely have a crush on Dolvett Quince, the new trainer from Atlanta on Biggest Loser Season 12.  I mean, c'mon! Have you seen the man training people on the Red Team?  Have you checked out those abs and that smile?

To me, though, the most charming thing about this guy is his personality and inspiration.  I am lucky to have sought him out on Twitter a few weeks ago before he had 20K+ followers and tweeted with him a little bit, so today I tweeted and asked him for his okay to use his great quote from last night's show... see below!

So there you go, friends!  We have a theme for the 90 Day Gift of Fitness & Health Challenge.  When you're feeling like you're too tired, don't want to get out of bed to walk or run, don't want to eat healthy when the fast food drive-in is on your way home, think of this:  "Make RESULTS, not excuses!!"
We CAN do this!

Biggest Loser 12: Let the Battle of the Ages Begin!

Tomorrow night is it, friends... the new premier of season 12 of Biggest Loser and there are definite changes in the air!  First of all - as the new promo picture highlights, Jillian Michaels is gone.  (You'd have to be a BL hater or living under a rock to not know this by now! lol)  I, personally, loved Jill and will miss her tough love and borderline sick humor but I'm a big fan of Bob Harper, too, so it will be good to see some continuity in training.

I'm really excited to see that Dolvett Quince from Atlanta has joined the show.  This guy is the real deal, friends.  He is a trainer who knows what he's doing to motivate and encourage and get people to their goals...and, ahem! He's not too hard on the eyes. ; )  You can follow him on Twitter like I am @Dolvett or on Facebook.

There is all kinds of chatter about Anna Kournikova and how she'll fit in and whether or not she has the credentials to be on Biggest Loser. I'm personally hoping she does a great job and admire her work in helping kids across the US to get moving and active.  Here is a little part of the NBC blurb about her: "As a former World #1 doubles player and #8 singles player, as well as a certified trainer, Kournikova has always made a healthy lifestyle an integral part of her life, and she's honored to have the opportunity to inspire others as part of the upcoming 12th season."  She does, indeed, have training certification, folks!

The contestants I've tweeted with are anxious for tomorrow night's premier.  Some twitter contestants include:   @CJRainville (she's a doll!) @JessicaLimpert (she is, too!) @joemitchell1 @ramonmedeiros50 and @John_Rhode.  Locally, I'll be rooting for Johnny Forger who is 65 and a Boston area realtor.  I'm still trying to figure out whether or not I met him in February at the Boston auditions

I just tweeted with Ali Sweeney (she's returning as host which is wonderful!) and she'll be live tweeting EST tomorrow night, too.  I asked her if she was planning to tweet live and her reply was "Heck, yeah!!" LOL  She's lots of fun! : )

I'm hoping you'll join me tomorrow night from 8-10pm EST for the Twitter party online!  I'll be joining the Mamavation crew for the #BritaChallenge party.  We always have a blast during these two hours and, as is her way, Leah Sedgie (@Bookieboo) has come up with great giveaways that will be happening during the event (just click on the party link to get in on the giveaways)! :)  Other hosts/panelists at the party are some of my favorite bloggers and fitness folks including Carla aka MizFitOnline, Roni Noone, Jenn from FitBottomedGirls, and Tony from TheAntiJared. Fun bunch!

You all know how much I love drinking water, so the Brita tie-in is one I'm happy to support tomorrow night!  Without water, we dehydrate, our bodies shut down and we basically stop losing weight or being healthy.  Drink up, my friends! :)

I love watching Biggest Loser.  I love seeing the inspiring transformations and I love challenging myself Tuesday nights during the two hours of television watching to do something healthy.  I'll be involved in the Twitter party tomorrow night and just want to watch... but next week... who's with me for step aerobics during at least two 15 minute intervals during the show? *grin*

Here's to our health, to finding inspiration to continue our journeys and a toast of good luck to this season's contestants!

Exciting Biggest Loser Ranch Trip Giveaway from Joy Bauer & SpaWeek

Helllloooo, Bob! :)
You all know I am a fan of The Biggest Loser on NBC and love to tweet during the shows live (to the point where I have been put in "Twitter prison" for tweeting TOO much during the show! lol).  So when SpaWeek.com approached me to find out if I'd like to share links on our sites to offer up an incredible prize package, I jumped at the opportunity!  (But, okay, I didn't jump UP and onto a box... because I *still* can't do that!!! *insert muttering here!*)

Joy Bauer (right) and a fan
In June I saw Joy Bauer in person at the Boston Health & Fitness Expo and listened to her motivating talk on getting healthy and living a healthy lifestyle.  I've always liked Joy's segments on NBC's Today Show and have enjoyed her nutrition advice through her Woman's Day column and Slim Down Plan!.  Now Joy is co-sponsoring this "Fast Track to Health Giveaway" with SpaWeek.com and the Biggest Loser Resort and it is an incredible!

If you don't know about this giveaway yet, friends, you need to check it out because the "ultimate weight loss journey for one deserving winner" is the very cool prize and includes a six night stay at the Ranch, three meals a day, spa services, a private cooking class with the Executive Chef of the Resort, a nutritional plan developed for you by Joy Bauer, and more!  The details are below and you'll need to go to SpaWeek's Facebook page to enter the Fast Track to Health Giveaway.
Please do note one thing about the prize, friends... airfare is not included so if you do win, you'd have to find a way to get to and from Malibu on your own! ; )

Did I mention that I'm excited to be one of the featured healthy bloggers on SpaWeek Daily's blog? I am answering what my #1 Diet Tip is along with other spa and fitness bloggers.  Can you guess what my tip is before peeking? : ) You can skip over to SpaWeek Daily's blog by clicking here! :)

How awesome would it be if one of the HealthyLoserGal blog readers won the grand prize to The Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu? Maybe Sam Poueu would be your trainer during the week... he works there, you know, and a gal can day dream! ; )

Fun at Boston Health & Fitness Expo

How gorgeous do these two look? : )
I headed down to the Hynes Convention Center in Back Bay, Boston today to take in the free Health & Fitness Expo, knowing that the reigning Biggest Loser, Olivia Ward, and her oh-so-fun sister, Hannah, were featured guests.

I have always been a fan of Teddy Brewski of the Patriots, but today I saw even more reasons to respect this man... he was so genuine and friendly and helpful to each and every child he encountered.  He sat on the floor with them to speak to the little kids at their level and then - when they were running some football drills - he watched each child, stopping them to comment on their technique or to praise them with a 'great job!'... I was really impressed.  What a great role model he was to the kids today.

Watching drills being run...

... and then commenting on how to improve or saying 'great job!'

Along the way I talked with all different types of vendors and health professionals and listened to Joy Bauer (NBC Today Show) on her tips for 'getting healthy".

A man from the Boston area, Joe Scott, and I chatted a little bit as he told me about his book "The Joe Dial" and his belief that there are three types of people in the world: Takers, Givers, and Take-and-Givers. (You can check out his book on Amazon.)
A fun Life Size "Operation" Game at Expo
The New England Patriot Mascot signing footballs

It is all about knowing what a 'serving size' is!

I got in a lot of walking in addition to bringing home a bag full of health and fitness info I'll look through tonight and some fun give aways!

I'm proud to be a LOSER! Anniversary Giveaway #1

I am really excited to be able to pass along to you guys - readers of the journey I've been on the past two years now - some great ANNIVERSARY GIVEAWAYS this week.

If you follow me on Twitter (thank you to those of you who do!!), then you know on Tuesday nights between 8-10pm EST you can usually find me tweeting away about the current season of The Biggest Loser.  I know there are plenty of divergent opinions about the show but I unabashedly like and watch it! Some weeks I'll take 30 minutes aside and do step aerobics on the WiiFit during the show so I don't feel too guilty for sitting on my backside while watching their challenges!  :)

Click to enlarge for Hollie Self's words of advice :)

I've been really fortunate to connect with a few of the past contestants and see they're doing amazingly well "off the ranch" and THAT inspires me all the more.  Over the years, two women from the show have been "my favorites" and they are Hollie Self from Season 4 and Tara Costa from Season 7. I interviewed Hollie on this blog last May and know that today she was running a race in California!  I'm excited to let you know, too, that part of the HLG 2nd Anniversary celebration these next 10 days includes an interview with Tara Costa - who has begun her own foundation to inspire others to live a healthy, active life!

Comfort food AND healthy! Brown Rice Pudding!

So the first giveaway this week is Chef Devin Alexander's wonderful The Biggest Loser Dessert Cookbook.  My son gave me my copy for Christmas and inscribed the inside with "For Mom, my favorite loser and great chef!" *grin*  I've since made probably six or seven of the desserts and they are 1) easy to make 2) DELICIOUS and 3) low in calories and fat grams.  I love cookbooks that tell you the nutritional info on what you're cooking and this one has that, too!

Rules for all the giveaways this week:
1) Follow HealthyLoserGal blog
2) If you're on Twitter or Facebook, follow me in one or both places (I'm @HealthyLoserGal on Twitter and "HealthyLoser Gal" on Facebook, plus have the "Healthy Loser Gal" page there, too!)
3) For every giveaway you are entering, tweet about the #hlg2year giveaways with a link back to healthylosergal.blogspot.com
4) Tell me in the comments why you'd enjoy this cookbook and Voila! You're entered! :)

You can enter in all the giveaways this month, but you can only be awarded one. All the separate giveaway winners will be announced on March 31st in a separate post here and it is up to you to get back to me at healthylosergal@yahoo.com by April 6th with your mailing address, etc.  : )

Visiting Biggest Loser 12 Open Casting Call: "Wicked Good!"

Saturday was bitter cold in Boston but that did not deter the 400+ hopefuls who showed up at the Boston Seaport Hotel to try out for the next season of The Biggest Loser!  It was so inspiring to me to see so many people, of many shapes and sizes, waiting patiently in line for their chance to change their lives!  Young and old, alike, turned out in force to be interviewed by the Biggest Loser Casting Team and given their opportunity to tell their story to one of the three casting directors.

I'm blessed to be able to say that since I've lost over 100 pounds in the past (nearly) two years, I no longer qualify to be a contestant on the show so I wasn't there to audition.  I was there, I suppose, to root for those who were and - honestly - to get a 'behind the scenes' glance for all of us who are faithful Biggest Loser lovers!  So here we go, my take on Saturday's auditions...

Holland Striplan listening to a hopeful contestant's
story. (Please note the Mr. Potato Head! lol)
I was wearing a Healthy Loser Gal t-shirt which helped me be recognized and welcomed by Holland Striplan (she's the Biggest Loser casting wiz!) and introduced to the other two members of the casting team.  Holland gave me the okay to take photos and poke around to my heart's content!  I've been a reporter in a past life, so this was second nature to me and - camera and notebook in hand - off I went to see what the skinny was! ; )
I first met Jay Kruger - from Season 5 - who with his brother, Mark, were fan favorites.  Mark is still being kidded about his crying continually on the show that season!  Jay is local to the Boston area, living in New Bedford, Mass.

Jay is a friendly, great guy and told me that he's just begun training for his second Boston Marathon.  We chatted about shin splints and his tendinitis and how his body balked at him running back to back marathons last year and the months of recovery it took afterward.  Now three years away from his time on the ranch, Jay looks amazingly fit and gained back only a few pounds (I'm guessing muscle, not fat, because he looks great) since he had the final weigh-in for Biggest Loser.  I asked him if he looks back at his 'old self' and is amazed at the difference that three years can make?  "Everything is so much better. Life is good!" he smiled back in reply to that question!

Jay chatted with potential contestants easily in line, taking photos with them and laughing about stories, encouraging every one of the folks to - whether they were chosen for the show or not - continue their goal of being fit and losing the weight.  I'm happy to report that he's agreed to guest blog sometime soon here, too!

Elizabeth Ruiz, Season 10, chatting with hopefuls...
One of the finalists from last season, Elizabeth Ruiz, was also on hand to meet and greet the hopeful Biggest Loser contestants as they waited through the lines.  Elizabeth is a beautiful young woman who lost over 70 pounds from the day she walked onto the ranch, June 1st, 2010 to her final weigh in.

Since I have asthma, I was interested to find out from Elizabeth how she is doing now with her exercise since it seemed to be a major impact on her during the show.  Elizabeth reports that her asthma is much better and that she is able to control it far better now that she's lost weight and is working out regularly.  "I really pay attention to my breathing now," she said, "and when I have a problem, I get my breathing in control and can go on."  I understood from personal experience completely what she meant! ; )

Elizabeth explained that her time on the ranch was very isolated from the real world... the three months of last summer, from June 1st to August 29th... were spent with no 'real world' worries of paying bills, going to work, dealing with day to day family and real life issues.  "We were in a bubble," Elizabeth explained to me, "completely isolated".  And coming back into the real world, revisiting old problems, isn't easy for anyone.

But Elizabeth, to me, seems to have come into her own.  She explained that she believes that everything happens for a reason and talked about how both Brendan and Frado of Season 10 took on 'big brother' roles once they'd auditioned with her last April in Boston and saw her collapse from an asthma attack while doing step-ups.  Having big brothers in her real life, Elizabeth was comfortable in that role with them and their support helped her get into the final contestants of Season 10. And yes, she keeps in touch with them both now, too.

Elizabeth's time on Biggest Loser taught her important life lessons, aside from the weight loss. I asked her what the biggest lesson from the ranch that she came away with was: "It is okay to be selfish sometimes. No one is going to take care of me, but me."  And she's right! No one can lose the weight or get your body fit besides ourselves.  We have to take responsibility for our own well being, our own goals... whether we have friends acting as big brothers for us or not, in the end - we only can get healthy on our own.
As shown on The Biggest Loser, Elizabeth hopes to encourage children in the schools of Lawrence, Mass. how to stay healthy and fit.  Her next goal includes getting her personal training certification and helping others at the Sculpture at Strength fitness club in Chelmsford, Mass.
A group from late afternoon
waiting before meeting casting directors...
Finally, the people that I met who were auditioning were amazing! I admire them for giving it a shot to get on the show and wait in hours of lines to meet with the casting teams.  Here is how I saw what the process worked like:
1) you show up and fill out forms...
Bonnie from Brockton was trying out a 2nd time...
fingers crossed for her!
2) You wait (for three or four hours average, it seemed) in different rooms to go onto casting
Finally outside of the casting team rooms... what will you say?
The guy in the hat was a 'fish monger' and had an incredible story!

Anxious to see what is going on
in the casting room, two hopefuls
couldn't help but peek!
3) You then file into the casting rooms and meet the casting team and they explain to you what it is The Biggest Loser is looking for in contestants and that this moment is your chance to tell your story, what makes YOU unique, why they should decide to cast you...
Three tables of auditioners telling stories to the casting team
I'm hoping the husband and wife in the red were cast! :)

4) That's it! After you've spoken with the casting directors and everyone at your table has told their story, you're encouraged to also send in a video to the show if you haven't.
5) That very evening, the decisions were made on who would be called and would wouldn't.  By midnight I saw tweets and Facebook posts from Holland Striplan and @BLCastingTeam that they'd finished with calls.
Holland Striplan explains the
casting process...
What impressed me about the hopefuls most of all was that they took a first step to realize they need help, they need to change where they are now and become healthier people.  And that - in my way of thinking - already has them a step ahead soooo many others who refuse to look at their health problems.  To me, the people who showed on Saturday and tried... they're not losers, they're going to win in this battle!

PS:  HUGE thanks to Holland Striplan and The Biggest Loser Casting Team for letting me attend on Saturday and listen in on the casting calls and take photos. I had a great time and am so thankful to have been given the opportunity! Thanks, too, to Jay and Elizabeth for their interviews!   :)

First for Women photo shoot

Today I looked in the full length mirror, dressed to the nines in a hot pink tight wrap dress, hiiiigh heels and hose, my hair and makeup done by professionals and I had to smile because I thought to myself "I've got my figure back!".  If I do say so myself, I looked damn good! : )

After 110+ pounds lost, First for Women Magazine contacted me to interview me about my weightloss and how I did it... how I overcame my bad habits and replaced them with healthy ones.  I pretty much answered, "Vtrim!".  I am so thankful to the folks at Vtrim for teaching me new behavior techniques that have led me to the fun day I had today: a photo shoot for the First for Women January or February issue!

The photographer took nearly 1000 photos today... and I only have a few iPhone photos to share, but here they are... one from 7:30am this morning in my kitchen with the hair & makeup gal, Laura, starting my "makeover" and then one of the outfits I wore for the photo session.  The stylist, Alicia, is pinning the pant legs tighter as... get this!... the size 12 slacks she brought with her were too big!  Woohooo!

I dreamed of a day like today... when I would feel like myself again... feel comfortable in my own skin and happy.  Today was a great, fun day.  I'm proud of myself.  Proud of who I am again.  Thank you for sharing this journey with me, friends.  If I can do this - change my life by dreaming, believing, and achieving my goals - you can, too!

Here's to our health!
