Fifteen months into the journey...

So here I am again.  Now fifteen months into my weightloss & "get healthy" journey! I am proud of how far I've come but not ready, by any means, to say 'this is good enough'.  It  isn't.  I'm getting out of the "overweight" BMI stats and will be able to take whatever my trainer, Parker, throws my way within the next three to four months.  By Columbus Day of this year, I will be at my healthy weight and I will be able to RUN! :)

Today is Father's Day in the U.S. and I cannot help but think of my Dad, whom I loved so very much and was so close to, and how proud he would be of me now.  He died over 25 years ago now and - of course - I miss him, but somehow I think I may not have been on this journey at all were he still around.  He had a way of cutting to the quick of the matter if he thought I was steering off course.  Somewhere along the line I would have heard something like "those pants are kind of tight, don't you think, Jan?  You might want to lay off those Pepsi-Colas!" and he would lift his eye brow and give me that 'all knowing nod' as if to say "You hear what I'm saying to you, right?"  *grin*  And because his approval meant so much to me, I probably would have 'laid off the soda'!   So, I can't help but think today that he may be smiling down from above, knowing I've worked damn hard at this and would be proud of me.

Many of you who I yack with on Twitter or have followed the blog here for awhile know that I have a dream board.  It is a way of keeping your dreams and goals front & center in your mind throughout everyday.  I have made my dream board my laptop's wallpaper as well as the background on my Twitter home page.  One of the pictures I included on the dream board (although you can't see it on Twitter) is a photo of a fit woman on a beach, her shoulders/head on a stability ball, her hips raised, her feet planted square on the sand as she is doing chest presses.  I saw that and included that photo because I thought "when I can do that, I will be FIT!".

 *beam*

Please take a look at these two photos.  One is the photo on my dream board.  The other photo is of me and Parker yesterday at the YMCA in Waltham... doing the same exact thing.  I teared up at training this week and told Parker how much his pushing me has meant to me - how much he has helped me and how thankful I am to him that I have gotten to where I can look in a mirror and actually recognize myself again.  He started to say "you've done all the work" and I stopped him mid-sentence to ask him to please accept my thanks.  He grinned & did which made me feel truly happy.  I believe that good things and good people enter our lives when we believe in our dreams.  Beth Casey Gold and the folks at Vtrim are a great example of that.  Anthony at the YMCA changing his mind from who he was originally going to assign to me as a trainer, and pairing me up with Parker, is another example.

Dream. Believe. Achieve.
I'm no longer the person who couldn't walk a flight of stairs without getting winded.  I'm no longer terrified if my inhaler isn't within sight!  I'm no longer the person ordering a large pizza and - when the delivery guy arrives - pretending someone else is in the house with me to eat it!! I'm no longer the person looking at a photo of a fit woman on a beach doing something that was out of reach.

The reality is if we believe in ourselves, nothing is truly out of our reach.

With hard work, patience and persistence... we CAN do this!  And guess what?  I *am*! :)

Guest Blog: Vtrim Answers "What Do I Do About Cravings?!"

As promised, this week and next will be answers to your questions from the dietitians at The University of Vermont's Vtrim Online weightloss program. : ) This is the program that I have been on since end of February and have lost nearly 30 pounds with!  There are no gimmicks with Vtrim Online, no magic pills, no shakes that replace my food... it just is good old common sense, university-backed knowledge about healthy diet, and exercise.  And it WORKS!!  I'll post this Vtrim answer today and then the others next week.  After the last blog post from Vtrim, I'll announce who has won the Vtrim Diet & Cookbook (which won the James Beard Award!).

Enjoy, friends!!

Hi HLG Blog Readers!

It’s Beth and Heather, Registered Dietitians from Vtrim Online, and we’re here with answers to your insightful questions from HLG’s birthday blog post. Thanks HLG!

We were excited to see so many great questions that indicated you do not take your health for granted. At Vtrim, we also value credible, scientific information – no gimmicks! So with that in mind, we narrowed your questions down and merged a few into one response to get more of your questions answered.

1. Readers had questions about dealing with cravings and emotional eating…

Cynthia asked, “I can't get past those nighttime with the TV cravings. What can I munch on that won't add on the pounds?”

Another reader said, “I have such a hard time dealing with stress eating! I crave junk, junk, and more junk. Is there anything I can do to rid myself of these cravings once and for all?”

SpunkySuzi asked, “I seem to really crave simple carbs. Is there any way to help deal with this??”

Cravings…that yearning for a specific food or type of food, independent of whether you are physically hungry. It seems you can’t get the food off your mind unless you deal with it by giving in. Most everyone experiences cravings. And most women tend to crave sugary foods and foods high in fat while men tend to crave salty foods or savory foods high in protein.

There’s an unanswered debate about whether cravings are biological or psychological. Emerging research shows an association between your body’s chemicals and hormones with hunger levels. But, research is also strong to support the influence of our physical environment and emotional or psychological experiences on the urge to eat. Regardless of which source is contributing to your craving, cravings CAN be managed and potentially eliminated.

One of the most important steps to managing a craving is to pay attention to what precedes it. This awareness is critical to making a change. Most cravings are triggered by activities you have historically paired with food. For example, routinely having a snack in front of the TV can lead to craving food every time you sit down at the TV. Same goes for emotional eating—whether it is stress, anger, or boredom. Many have trained themselves to fill an emotional void with food. Consequently, when the emotions kick in so does overeating.

The healthiest way to manage a craving is to replace eating with an alternative behavior. As we often say at Vtrim, it’s not about learning to eat carrots in front of the TV, it’s about learning to NOT eat in front of the TV. What can you do INSTEAD of eating when those triggers trip you up? These are strong associations so don’t be surprised when it is hard to disassociate food from a familiar activity. Chewing gum or sipping a zero-cal beverage or hot tea can be a good start while you become more keenly aware and begin to adjust your eating behavior. Taking a look at your daily eating patterns can also help. You may be getting the urge to eat at night because you haven’t fueled your body regularly throughout the day. Or a very stressful day may mean that you’ve neglected to eat when your body needed it. The most surefire way to get out of a craving ritual is to consciously stop responding to stimuli with food. Go for walk or call a friend when you need to let off steam. Take a hot bath to relax or keep your hands busy with a craft or catalog while watching TV.

If all else fails and you still want to eat something, be prepared by having smart choices at your finger tips. Pay attention to your environment. You will eat the foods you choose to keep in your house. And the foods most readily available in our toxic food environment tend to be simple carbs, sweets, and fatty foods. Limiting your exposure to these foods and having healthy alternatives readily available will help tremendously when hard-wired cravings kick in. Be sure to keep satisfying alternatives close by. What is satisfying is a personal preference but some suggestions might be lite microwave popcorn, whole grain cereal, sugar-free hot chocolate, an energy bar. This will help you to stay in control of your food environment.

Sometimes the best way to nip a craving in the bud is to allow yourself to have a small portion of what you are really craving rather than trying to squash it with alternative foods that just don’t cut it. A small piece of high quality chocolate, a single-serving bag of chips, or a pre-packaged portion-controlled ice cream can be budgeted into your day without ruining your weight management goals. Try to make this the exception to the rule but know that ultimately you have the choice.

Many thanks to Beth and Heather for this great information and answering our first set of questions.  Feel free to ask follow-up questions in comments! : ) More Vtrim Online answers on the blog next week...

Fit & Fab & Fifty Two!

Today is my 52nd birthday! I am so incredibly grateful to be celebrating my birthday and feeling FABULOUS!  I mean it.  I feel so healthy and on my way to being really fit!

This week was a major milestone for me:  I dropped from the BMI rating of "OBESE" to "Overweight".  That may not sound like much if you've never been morbidly obese or simply obese, but let me tell you... this is a health goal I have worked on for 15 months.  I'm teared up just blogging about this because being overweight still isn't ideal for my health, but it is a far cry from when I was morbidly (as in DEATH!) obese.  I expect to be out of "overweight" BMI ranges this summer, so - friends - my life is, indeed, blessed & good! : )

I want to share the comparison photos with you below.  The one on the right was of me celebrating my birthday while visiting my son in Austin, TX last year.  I had lost 20 lbs. then and thought I was looking pretty good! I was definitely healthier than I had been the year before.  The photo on the left was taken on Memorial Day (two days ago).  I've given myself a huge birthday present... I am *me* again.  I'm not at my goal, but I can look in the mirror and be happy with who I see looking back at me.

I'm thrilled to be celebrating my birthday with all of you.  You're my support system and a darn good one! Thank you for all the great birthday wishes - I appreciate every single one of them!

Here's to a great, healthy, fantabulous year ahead for us all!

Your 52 year old fit & faboo friend,
Healthy Loser Gal / Jan

Hollie Self of The Biggest Loser: The Sky Is The Limit

Today I am absolutely thrilled to bring you the interview that Hollie Self, The Biggest Loser Season 4 Second Runner-Up, was nice enough to grant me for the Healthy Loser Gal blog!  Hollie has been one of my very favorite contestants over the years of BL because she has an unstoppable competitive drive and a positive, look foward attitude!  Since The Biggest Loser, her life has changed dramatically from cheerleading coach and teacher to a move that has settled her into California and working behind the scenes at The Biggest Loser Ranch.  Below she shares behind the scene BL finale moments to incredibly valuable tips on starting your own weight loss journey, not beating yourself up over slips, journaling, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and sooo much more!

HLG:
The Biggest Loser Finale is May 25th this year... as second runner up of BL4, you must remember the pre-weigh-in nerves that this year's contestants are now feeling. What is your most vivid memory of the actual live finale for BL4?

Hollie:
I absolutely remember the moments before I walked out onto the stage for our live finale! The entire week before, the finalists are sequestered from everyone else, so it was me, my two best gal pals, and a "casting wrangler" in a hotel, just kind of hanging out beforehand. When I got to the studio that day, I was in my own
dressing room as well- and the energy out in the hallways was nerve-wracking! I couldn't wait to get out and see everyone! I had to do my own hair and I remember I could barely get a grip on the flatiron! When it was time for us to make our "reveals" and bust through that paper- there were PAs that held up giant black sheets
inbetween the four finalists so we couldn't see one another! We could see the trainers backstage from across the room as well- and I was frantically waving at them to get their attention- and I must say- the look on Bob Harper's face (who had not been my trainer) was priceless- and I will never forget it!

The next thing I was focusing on was getting across the stage in heels- the director for the finale had actually changed my footwear that day because no one thought I would be able to make it all the way over to Alison without biting the dust!

Busting through the paper was one of the most fun moments I have EVER had- and it was so thrilling to hear everyone cheering for me- even though I couldn't see anybody because the lights were so bright! I had a moment where I thought, "Oh my gosh- I did it. I actually DID it." and it was such an emotional moment for me.

HLG:
You have stayed incredibly fit since the show finished. What do you attribute your success to when other BL contestants have not been able to maintain their weight loss once back 'in the real world'?

Hollie:
Life in the "real world" is trying- in various ways- but it ABSOLUTELY can be done. One of my favorite things to say to newly inducted Alums is, "Welcome to maintenance- it sucks!" One of the problems that I think most of us- and I am talking about all weight loss winners, not just TBL contestants is this: We know how to gain weight (obviously) and we know how to lose weight...but learning how to maintain is an entirely different animal.

For one, we have a sense of relief that "it" is finally over and that we can go back to real life. However- this is not true...there will never again be life the way it was before BL. It is a new way of life- and you have to learn your way in it. A few weeks ago I was talking with Ali Vincent (BL5 Winner) and Brittany Aberle (BL5) and we were having this exact conversation. We all agreed that the first year after TBL is very hard.  You are basically learning how to live a new life- which means it takes a while. Was I magically going to erase 28 years of bad habits after 8 months of hard work? I think we know the answer to that.

For me, it has been two and a half years now of living "Life after BL"- and I am extremely proud of the fact that I have been able to stay relatively close to my finale weight. I cannot speak to the trials of other BL Alums, but for me, I have found new challenges and outlets for myself to keep me motivated and active. I make the time every single day to take care of myself- and it can be hard sometimes, but I try to remind myself that this is now a lifestyle. I also rely heavily on my support system (Nicole and Julie from BL4, as well as other BL Alums) to keep my head in the right place, and that has been extremely helpful.

HLG:
I know that you are now a runner. When did you begin to love running (if you DO love it!?) and what motivates you to run 1/2 marathons and marathons?

Hollie:
This is a great question because I will be the first to say that I have never ever been a runner! This time last year (May 2009) I could barely run two miles without stopping- and was hating every second of it. I relied on the many other forms of cardio to keep me going.

Last summer I was given the opportunity to participate in an Olympic Distance Triathlon in San Francisco with other Bl Alumni- and I jumped at the challenge. I started following a training program...and just kept at it. First it was 2 miles..then a few weeks later it became 3, until I ran 6.2 at the end of my triathlon. Shortly after, I was asked to run the NYC marathon for charity, and I thought "why not"? With the help and encouragement of friends, I found a beginner's program and started following it. One day on a weekday run, my iPod died about a half mile into a five mile run. I decided to keep going and see how it felt. To my complete surprise, I enjoyed it. I immediately thought "no, no, no! Not possible! I am NOT a runner!" Then I kind of sat back and thought..."or maybe...I am."

The main thing that keeps me going is the challenge- I love a challenge! I am a very competitive person- and the thing I love about running now- is that I am competing against myself! And it is a challenge that will always keep me going- because I can always try to better my own time- and I love that. I don't know that I'll ever love marathon running- but my goal is to complete my second this winter and shave 40 minutes off of my time (as I ran/walked the first one, and suffered a foot injury towards the end).  (photo is of Hollie in AZ this year competiting in a triathlon.)

HLG:
I love your optimism and that motivational quotes are featured on your Facebook page. Do you have a quote that you consider a favorite or one phrase that is your mantra?

Hollie:
I started my daily weekday quote on my facebook page mainly to help myself get through whatever I was facing for the day- and I am thrilled that the members of my age enjoy them, too! I have always loved quotes- and they definitely can help me change my attitude when I'm feeling a little "less than." I have multiple quotes that I love, but I would say that I have more of a theme song than a Mantra- the lyrics to Suzie McNeil's "Believe."   It got me through many a workout on the BL Ranch, and I listen to it at the end of every race that I do.

It is absolutely the theme song of my life.

I love every word, but my favorite part of the song is this:

"No one says it's easy
And no one says you have to be perfect
But as long as you try
You're always gonna find
It was worth it
If you just believe."

HLG:
Do you follow a strict diet? Do you eat low fat or all raw foods or lots of protein? What does a normal day of "Hollie food" look like and about how many calories do you think you eat on an average day?

Hollie:
I don't follow an extremely strict diet, no, but there are some guidelines that I follow. I stay away from fast food for the most part now- the fat and sodium content is just not worth it to me. Anything that has a "drive in" is usually a no go for me! I definitely still eat meat- and don't go with any particular "fad" eating plan. The main thing that I do is count calories- I find that when I do things go well, and when I don't- the scale moves! (I also have a list of what is in my kitchen on my Facebook page that anyone can access if they would like to see specifics).

When I am in training, I eat about 1600 calories a day- and of course some are little lower, and one day is usually much higher. Breakfast and AM snack are a protein and a carb usually consisting of 250-300 calories. They are planned around my workouts- if I do not workout then I only eat once. Lunch is my biggest meal of the day consisting of 500-600 cals and is more often than not out with coworkers, and then I try to balance that meal out with a light dinner of lean protein with some type of greens about 300-400 cals.

Do I mess up sometimes and eat a brownie? Of course! But I remember again, that this is a lifestyle- and know that I am making good choices the majority of the time and try not to beat myself up over it too badly:) It truly is about finding balance- in all areas of life.

HLG:
Is journaling a part of your routine? Do you keep either a food or fitness/workout journal or both?

Hollie:
I don't keep a workout journal, but I do workout with a personal trainer and a triathlon coach- so my workouts are predetermined. Before I had a coach, I would map out my workouts in my laptop calendar- planning my classes and cardio ahead of time. I schedule my workouts the way I would any other appointment- to be sure that I keep them. Like most of you- and most of the population- I have a job that requires me to work long hours, so I need to be organized when it comes to getting my training in.

I do keep a food journal- most of the time. Again, when calories get written down- things are much better, and when they don't get logged- that' s when the scale moves (in the wrong direction!). There are so many free websites out there that allow you to log your food- so people should take advantage. Also, after awhile you know the calorie content of our frequent foods, so it becomes easier to tally as you go. My favorite is the LoseIt App for the iPhone, who allows you to log both your exercise and your food.

HLG:
We all give in to temptation now and then... a slice of pizza, a bowl of ice cream, a candy that we crave. What advice can you give us on not beating ourselves up when we do slip up on occasion?

Hollie:
Oh my gosh- do NOT beat yourself up, whatever you do! Unfortunately I think for most of us the mentality is, "Oh I screwed up, the day is lost." That's not true! Move on from that moment- do NOT wait until the next day. And remember- it is not realistic to say you will never have pizza or ice cream again- hello! That stuff is tasty! Problems arise if you have them every day- but you are ok to have them every once in while- work it into your calories! Every choice is adding up to something, so try to remember what it is that you are working towards- and that no person is perfect. Then shake it off and move ahead.

HLG:
Kind of on that same topic... do you plan for certain foods you love when you're going out with friends or to an event? How do you maintain that balance of eating foods you love and keeping your weight in check?

Hollie:
It is all about balance, truly. Most of my meals are healthy- but if I am going out with friends, I'll be darned if I am not going to enjoy a glass or two of wine and a piece of bread from the basket! But to balance it out, I'll have a salad for dinner or some lean protein. Because I do make healthy choices most of the time, I can afford to indulge every once in a while. However- I try to plan activities that are not just centered around food. My friends and I will go to a concert, the beach, for a run- and food is not the focal point of our socializing, whereas it always was pre-BL. I also try to remember that food is NOT a reward and that I don't need to indulge every day. And oftentimes, a taste of something is just as satisfying as an entire helping.

HLG:
I love that you're part of the Biggest Loser family and that now you work behind the scenes on the show! Tell us what you do and what fun pranks you may have played on Bob and/or Jillian during this past season! : )

Hollie:
I have worked on several season of BL now- and it truly is a big family. There are literally hundreds of people that make it all work- from production assistants all the way up to the Executive producers. I work in the story department, and produce individual episodes as part of a team. We help move the creative process of the show along, interview the contestants, and create a discernible "story" for you all to follow along with at home. I actually have very limited contact with Bob and Jillian, though sometimes I do see them as they come and go from work. Even though it is so rewarding- It IS a job for me- and there isn't much goofing around when we are on set(the Ranch)- we have a lot to do to make sure we can bring you the best episodes possible. :)

I actually only spend about 7 days on the actual ranch (a week, or episode) and then spend up to 2 months in post production in an office, sifting through the footage that was filmed and making it into the show that comes to you a few months later!

HLG:
What is the one piece of advice you can give to those who are struggling with morbid obesity and don't know what to do to get started on their own journey to being healthy?

Hollie:
My main piece of advice to those who don't know where to start is this: YOU have to decide that you want to do this. Once you have truly made the decision that you are worth it, you have set something in motion. If you truly want to make a change, you can make it happen. And you do not need the Ranch in order to do it. There are so many outlets now for people to help them get started. Start by keeping a food journal, taking a walk, eliminating the soda, and take time to take care of YOURSELF. You are capable- and you CAN do it. Will it happen at breakneck speed like you see on TV? No- but at the end of the day, that doesn't matter. What matters is that you are taking the steps forward in order to live a healthier life.

HLG:
What is the biggest dream or goal in your life right now?

Hollie:
That's a great question- and I wish I had a specific answer for you:)  I have realized that the sky is the limit. Athletically, I want to get stronger and faster. Personally, I want to learn to love myself a little more and wait for the things I deserve. Professionally, I want to continue to love my job and progress. Overall, I want to get to a place where I feel like I can pay it forward- and really share with people that they too can live the life they've always dreamed of. I am doing it every day- and have never been happier.

Thank you so much, Hollie, for sharing yourself and your knowledge with us!!  You inspire me to dream big and go for my goals with gusto, as you have!! : )

THANK YOU!

Let's hear those questions... plus GIVEAWAY!

So you've seen the results I've had with Vtrim Online weightloss program these past 10 weeks and I know you must have some questions about what the program is that would be best answered by the Vtrim folks themselves!  Please leave any questions you have about the Vtrim program in the Comments to this post.  Out of the questions in Comments, one person's name will be randomly chosen to receive the book: The EatingWell Diet: The University-Tested VTrim Weight-Loss Program.  And the first week of June, all of the questions will be answered in a guest blog by VTrim staffers! : ) Sooo cool!

One of the girls in my 12-week online class lost 20 lbs. in 10 weeks BEFORE joining the class by following this book alone!  That tells you how great a book it is and how incredible the Vtrim plan is!  So ask those questions friends - they don't have to be questions just about Vtrim and can be general questions about weight loss, exercise, and following "diets" in general.  (My question my 1st week was "carbs vs fats"... which is better to reduce?)

And don't forget this piece of information - Vtrim is a non-profit organization thru the University of Vermont.  They're not trying to make money off of their participants... they've worked for 20 years doing research on what works to lose weight and stay healthy and they want to help us get fit and healthy for LIFE!! Woohooo! : )

Can't wait to see your questions! You're going to LOVE the book! : )

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, FRIENDS!
With my son, Danny, ten years ago when he was 13 and I was...oh...nevermind! ; )
With my Mom and my son, Thanksgiving 2009 :)

I'm a MAY-niac!

Only one month 'til my birthday and I'm feeling so much better physically than I have in years and years due in no small part to my wonderful trainer at the YMCA of Boston (Waltham branch) Parker and the folks at Vtrim who have guided me toward a future where I control my food intake and it doesn't control me!

I am REALLY enjoying working out and exercising at the Y!  I can hardly believe I am saying that but it is true and I can see the results, slowly but surely, on my body.  There is some definition in my arms, I have collar bones again, my balance is much better!  Parker mentioned to me last week that I have come a long way and my progress in our workouts is a steady arrow UP the graph! : ) All good!

May is going to be MAY-niac month for me as I try to fit in as much exercise and walking as I can before my birthday at the beginning of June! I'm sooo thrilled that Vtrim has offered me 12 more weeks of their classes which I start tomorrow night! : )  Next week is the last online Vtrim class of my original 12 weeks and I cannot believe how much I've learned in that short amount of time.  These 12 weeks of classes have truly changed my life... why else would I be going around the office and my house singing... "I'm a MAY-niac" from Flashdance!

As an ode to the YMCA, Vtrim, and Parker, my great trainer, below is my version of Flashdance "Maniac"! You may want to click on the YouTube video  at the bottom of this post before you begin to read so you can sing along while reading the new lyrics! *grin*

She's a May-niac

Just a Beantown girl on a Saturday night
Looking for her own healthy life
In the workout world no one knows her at all
They all say she’s lazy

Heart rate monitors the quick beat of her heart
Changing fat limbs into lean
She has lunged into the fitness zone
When the walker becomes the walk…

It can change your whole darn life
When the fitness fuels your fire
With a ball between the wall and crunch number three

She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s working like she’s never worked before
She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s sweating like she’s never sweat before!

Oh, the wobble board tests her sanity
It’s the balance most never see
Her trainer’s plans are a mystery
“Plank and now hold it!”

You complete your reps for that moment in time
Goal will come, not pass you by
In this push-up world, there is always that chance
That your hunger is staved for the night

There’s her iPod with its beat
Crunching, stretching, life is sweet!
Never stopping, with her core tucked in and held…

She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s working like she’s never worked before
She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s sweating like she’s never sweat before!

It can change your whole darn life
When the fitness fuels your fire
With a ball between the wall and crunch number three

She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s working like she’s never worked before
She’s a MAY-niac, MAY-niac at the Y
And she’s sweating like she’s never sweat before!

I have a new LOVE in my life...

Let me introduce you to my new love: Vtrim!

Sometimes in a new relationship, it takes a little while to get used to the other person.  Sure, at first - in the blush of the new relationship - they seem incredible, witty, like no one you've ever known before...  you gush about them to friends, to co-workers, to anyone who will listen....

But then - after a while - your feelings start to fade a bit.  You begin to see them as they really are.  You make excuses not to get together as planned.  Maybe they're not as smart as they appeared, maybe they really don't offer all the answers you believed they did, maybe they're actually not who they presented themselves to be at all... and then that blissful euphoria you'd experienced comes crashing down and you feel deflated, dejected, deserted.  Alone.

But what happens when the euphoria lasts?!  When - after the initial courtship - the relationship just keeps building and gets stronger and stronger and better and better and you find yourself saying :

THIS WORKS!
THIS IS WONDERFUL!
THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!

Now you understand how I feel about the Vtrim Online program that I have been following for the past nine weeks!  And here's the best part... in those nine weeks I have lost nearly TWENTY pounds and am more fit than I have been in the last ten plus years! I continue to lose weight each week and am working hard at getting my fitness mojo back every day. : )

Let me tell you about what I have come to understand about my new love, Vtrim Online:

1.  It is a program based on eighteen years of University research!

2.  Vtrim is NON-PROFIT!  They're not trying to 'sell you something' to make a buck or devise a way to keep you coming back.
3.  It all makes sense.  They teach you basics, i.e., how many calories make up one pound. 3,500. And after the basics, they teach you the techniques to change your behavior.  It is behavior modification that keeps the weight off so Vtrim teaches you tricks they've researched that WORK.  Their program is proven by research to work if you work at it.

4.  You journal every day and write down everything you eat as well as your exercise and your feelings.  This gives you a way to look back and see how you're doing - when you did well  - when you backslid a bit (if you were to) - and most importantly - shows you the triggers that cause you to overeat.  They're right there in your journal.  Bad day at work?  Oh, maybe that is why you went over your calorie budget by 400 calories.  Kids stressing you out in the morning - and look! At 2pm you ate 3 cups of ice cream after you'd eaten a full lunch when they went down for naps...

5.  Exercise is key! The Vtrim Online program starts you off very slowly with the exercise and very gradually increases the expected level.  Within a few short weeks you are doing more than you expected that you could do and beginning to love it as the weight falls off and you're eating great, healthy foods, not feeling hungry and loving the level of fitness you're achieving.
6. They don't expect you to "get it" all at once.  The 12 weeks of Vtrim online classes (I'm in week 9) that I've been attending for an hour every week lay it all out for you - one week after another - in a very organized and clear way.  They don't jump you ahead... they let you absorb what you're learning, practice it, come back and ask questions, and then they give you the next step, then the next... and it all makes perfect sense. And if it doesn't make sense for you - there is a person you can reach any day to talk with who is your online class 'facilitator'.  My facilitator is a great guy named Stuart who gave me the "sometimes it takes headstrong determination to get the job done" quote the first week when I was feeling a bit freaked out, worried I may fail. ; )

I am not failing at all, though!!  I am cooking at home again and loving it and I'm able to eat out and understand what it is I should be eating at restaurants and I'm no longer counting meaningless points!

Friends, my new love and I are going to be together for a very long time and I'm hoping you'll meet Vtrim, too, and fall in love as I have.

Some big news!

I'm happy to report that to celebrate my birthday the first week of June, the guest bloggers that week will be friends from the Vtrim Online program.  Woohoooo!  They'll answer any and all questions you may come up with about losing weight, recommendations for exercise, behavioral approach to weight loss and the Vtirm program.  They'll be glad to field any and all questions from you here on the blog and all will be posted the first week of June.

Send your Vtrim questions either through comments to this post or to me directly at: healthylosergal@yahoo.com  If you don't want your name displayed on the blog, just let me know and your question can be anonymous.  But please do ask any questions you have because the Vtrim facilitators are so incredibly knowledgeable and they're excited to be guest bloggers and share their information with us all! : )

I really do want to tell the world about Vtrim! LOL  I would become their spokesperson if I could - I'm that convinced that THIS is the right, proven plan for losing weight and keeping it off!  It's exciting to achieve goals that I've set for myself and see myself getting fitter.  I'm turning 52 and Fab-oo in June! ;)

Here's to our health, my friends!  Can't wait to read your questions! : )

Facing the Music and Measuring for Success: Inches Equal Miles!

On March 22nd of last year, I bit the proverbial bullet at the beginning of this weight loss journey I was embarking upon and posted my measurements in all of their "glory" on the Healthy Loser Gal blog. At that time they were:
46" Breasts (no pulling in... just 'as they hang'...good heavens!)
44" Waist
48" Backside (this one surprised me, somehow thought it was going to be smaller #)
17" Neck (at base)
28" Upper Thigh (pfft... cottage cheese thighs... just gross! but I'm working on it...)
19 1/2" Calf
This morning, encouraged by feeling better and knowing I'm fitting into smaller and smaller sizes of clothing, I grabbed the dreaded measuring tape and faced the music again!  And while the music is certainly no symphony yet, it does have an overture of success! : )

Today's measurements:

40" Chest vs 46"

38" Waist vs 44"

40" Hips/Backside vs 48"

15 1/2" Neck vs 17"

24" Upper Thigh vs 28"

17 1/2" Calf  vs. 19 1/2"

7 1/4" wrist vs 8"

= 28 total inches lost here 'n there in one year!

Hey! I know I'm no Gil Elvgren pin-up beauty yet... but I'm heading in the right direction! : )

What's for lunch?

I'm starting to experiment with new foods since really learning about what is nutritious and right for my body while on the online Vtrim program.  And I'm having a ball concocting new recipes! I'd forgotten how much I really enjoy cooking and preparing my own food - even when I'm the only one home eating it!  But - hey! I'm worth the effort and the food is delicious (if I do say so myself!)... and - a bonus - I can bring it with me to the office!

The black bean salad (or salsa) above is incredibly simple and really healthy! The recipe makes about four cups (4 servings) and lasts for two or three days in the frig before the avocado gets a little gooey! I'm not into gooey avocado so tend to make it and eat it in a couple of days! It is great as a salad with chicken or fish. My son put it on his hamburger!  For lunch at the office I put 1/2 cup (1/2 serving) on top of a baked potato with 2 tablespoons of fat free sour cream and ohhhhhhh man is that good! :)

Recipe:

1 can of black beans - rinsed and drained
1 small can of corn - drained
1 tomato diced
1/2 medium red onion diced
1 Tbsp of cilantro powder or 1/8 cup of fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 ripe Avocado - cubed
4 Tbsp Newman's Own Lighten Up Italian dressing (this isn't really needed but I like the taste... if you don't include it, you can cut out 60 calories and 6 grams of fat PER serving!!)
Nutrition:  193.25 calories & 10.2 grams of fat per cup/serving

I would love to know your lunch time favorites, too!  Remember, we're all in this together and DAMN we're feeling great and looking fine!  : )

What's for breakfast?

I have drastically changed my eating habits in the last couple of months and it has proven a wise decision! I've now lost 11+ pounds in 8 weeks since following the online Vtrim plan & exercising.  I'm conscious that this will be a lifelong change for me and am really experimenting with foods that I like and also find easy to make for mornings when I'm running out the door to work or evenings when I'm running in from (can't believe I'm going to say this and it will be true) working out at the gym!  I never really thought about fat grams before, either, and now try to keep my daily fat gram total at or below 25% of my usual calorie intake which is right about 1250-1400 daily.

So this morning's breakfast is pictured above!  One cup of Dannon Yogurt, Light & Fit Nonfat Vanilla (110 calories and 0 grams of fat); raspberries (10 calories & .10 grams of fat); 3/4 cup of Kashi GoLean: Crunch (145 calories and 2.25 grams of fat).  DELICIOUS!  Oh, and - of course - my ever-present water bottle is in the photo!

Do you guys have favorite meals that are easy and delicious and healthy that you could share?  Feel free to post in Comments! Thanks! : )

Have a great day!

Exhausted and SORE and Loving It!

I left the YMCA in Waltham in tears this afternoon... the good kind of tears that come along every once in a while when you realize you're attaining a goal you'd set for yourself.  My legs were shaking, my arms hurt... my face was as red as a ripe tomato and all I could think of was how truly grateful I am to the folks at the YMCA in Boston and the University of Vermont's VTrim Program for changing my life DRAMATICALLY in the last seven weeks.

My trainer, Parker, (see my 1st Parker post here) is wonderful. We've gotten past the first few weeks and things are harder and more challenging now for me... and I can't believe I'm saying that because I thought I would DIE during the 1st week of training.  But I didn't die... I just had great difficulty getting out of bed and walking up or down stairs for a few days! My muscles were yelling to me in no uncertain terms "Hey! We're here... do you feel us!?" LOL  The picture above is me on March 27th doing wall squats with the ball.  Can we say "yeowch"!?  You're probably thinking the camera makes me look red, huh? No! That is the hue of my face and my arms and chest at the end of an hour of training!

Parker's encouragement to me during training to keep going and his positive reinforcement when I feel like I really don't honestly have that last ounce of strength to pull up that curl or push down on that weight machine cord is an amazing thing for me to experience.  I have NEVER ever trained with anyone.  I've trained in a group setting in high school and college but never one-on-one like this.  People told me there would be days when I might hate him pushing me... I feel just the opposite.

I've needed someone to push me - to make me believe I have that ONE MORE within me - for years and years.  And here he is - putting me (today) on a balance wheel to engage every single muscle I had in my body while I tried to find my center and balance... while he tells me that in a few weeks I'll be standing on that balance wheel while doing curls.  (I looked NOTHING like the girl in the photo on the wobble balance board, by the way!)  Within minutes of being on this balance apparatus I had to laugh because I was dripping with sweat just trying to BALANCE... but - because I'm now a few weeks into this and can tell that the things that once I could barely do at all, I am actually improving at, I have to believe him... I'll be balanced and doing curls.  ME! Who'd a thunk it?

When I decided to go for the training at the YMCA I made a pact with myself that I wasn't going to do it half-way.  If I was going to put in the hour at the Y with a trainer, I was going to 'go for it' and I try to do that every week.

Parker called me a "superstar" today and that made me smile, I can tell you, because I just let all my inhibitions go and go for it there.  I make exhausted grunting noises and have my hair soaked with sweat and am red in the face and chest and can barely stand sometimes my legs are shaking so badly after floor exercises but I can look at myself in the mirror and know in my heart that I did give it everything I had.  And, friends, let me tell you - this ain't no walk in the park for me! LOL  I've got my eyes squeezed shut sometimes trying to remember to keep my core tight and my belly button pulled in and my hips square and my glutes squeezed and I'm in mental and physical agony... but I'M DOING IT!!!  And, darnitall, when I had to take Parker's offered hand today to get up off the mat, I wasn't ashamed to need the help getting up, I knew I'd given it everything I could.

If you don't think you can go to a gym and exercise or do one-on-one training, I'm here to tell you - YOU CAN!  If I can do it - as out of shape and overweight as I have been - YOU CAN DO THIS, TOO!  I am sooo thankful that I have Parker as my trainer and that he is pushing me but not intimidating me - everything is explained and I don't feel stupid to say to him (which I did...) "Parker, I'm not sure what my glutes even are!".  *grin*  You need to step out of your comfort zone, find a trainer you feel comfortable with, and step into a place where you put yourself first... where you don't care who is there watching or what you look like or how many push-ups you can do.  You walk in to that gym - tell yourself (and mean it!) that you're going to DO YOUR BEST and that will be enough.  And you will be so darn proud of yourself that you've taken those first steps.  I'm proud of myself... really proud.  I had set a goal and I'm achieving it.

A separate component of my training with Parker is that the YMCA Waltham facility has great equipment, including LifeFitness equipment where you can go online to the site's Virtual Trainer and set-up a personal training experience for yourself, download that training program to a USB stick and then bring it to the YMCA, plug it into the machine and your workout is recorded.  I have the program keep my heart rate at a certain level while walking which means that the Virtual Trainer adjusts the incline as well as the rate of my walk to keep my heart rate at the exact place it is supposed to be.  I think that is all very cool - especially because I can then download my workouts to the LifeFitness site and then Parker can look at what I'm doing during the week on my own.  It's ALL good!

Paying it forward...
One final thing about training today that really just made me so happy! Parker mentioned that one of the Healthy Loser Gal blog readers contacted him to train one-on-one because of my post about training with him. I am overjoyed by that! That is kind of a 'pay it forward' moment for me because I feel so very grateful to the YMCA for giving me this opportunity, I'm really so glad that someone else will now benefit from training one-on-one with Parker, too! :) How totally awesome is that?

Thanks for all your support, my friends! There are days when I don't feel like going out to walk or heading to the gym, but then I remember something one of you may have said here in Comments or Tweeted to me, and I'm on my way.  Your faith in me means so much - and I'm so grateful for your friendship!

We're doing this! I'm more than halfway to my goal weight and am finally getting myself fit! :)  Woohooo!

My Best Days Are Ahead of Me!

When Danny Gokey was on American Idol last season, I actually called in and voted for him for the first time I'd voted for anyone.  I liked his voice, his persona.  So when I heard him on country music radio (yes, I listen to all music - including country!), I was excited to hear him and realize he'd finally come out with his own album.  The first song released is "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me" and really is great... but when I watched the video (I've posted the link here) and looked at the post-it notes and what is written on the posters throughtout the video, I liked Danny Gokey and this song all the more!  I hope you'll find it as inspirational as I do.   Remember, "Life is too short to be anything but happy!" :)

My Best Days are Ahead of Me Lyrics

Blowing out the candles
On another birthday cake
Old enough to look back and laugh at my mistakes
Young enough to look at the future and like what I see
My best days are ahead of me

Life hasn't always been a party
But mostly it's been good
There's only one or two things that I'd change if I could
I dont get lost in the past or get stuck in some sad memory yah
My best days are ahead of me

Age is nothing but a number
Sometimes I have to wonder
What does it really mean
But hey im still putting it together
I keep getting better
if I keep getting better
I can be whatever I want to be
My best days are ahead of me

Age is nothing but a number
Sometimes I have to wonder
What does it really mean
But hey im still putting it together
I keep getting better
if I keep getting better
I can be whatever I want to be
My best days are ahead of me

I've got sunsets to witness
dreams to dance with
beaches to walk on
and lovers to kiss
there's a whole lot of world out there
that I can't wait to see
My best days are ahead of me
My best days are ahead of me.

Happy Easter! Spring Strawberry Salad Recipe

I first had this salad in Nashville, Tennessee when I lived there in the early 1980s (I know, some of you weren't born then!! lol) and worked with the Grand Ole Opry.  This is a recipe that was made with all sugar and lots of fat but - over the years - I've pared it down to make it very healthy and low calories with hardly a trace of fat.  The wonderful thing is, it is just as delicious!  This congealed salad goes great with the traditional Easter ham, too! :)

Strawberry Spring Salad

 Ingredients:

  •  2 large packages of sugar free mixed berry Jell-o
  • 1 quart of hulled fresh strawberries or one large package of frozen strawberries (set aside four or five great looking strawberries for decoration)
  • 3 firm (not green) bananas, peeled
  • 1 small can/tin of water packed crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 large container of fat free sour cream

Directions:
  • Prepare Jell-o per directions and set aside on counter.
  • Wash and chop strawberries and bananas together into small pieces and mix with pineapple into gelatin.
  • Pour ½ of the mixture into glass oblong dish and refrigerate until firm, leaving other ½ on counter covered.
  • Once firm, remove from refrigerator and carefully spread the sour cream over top of the mixture making certain to evenly spread along corners and side.
  • Gently pour the remaining mixture of Jell-o and fruit atop the sour cream layer and refrigerate 3-4 hours. When firm, decorate with fresh strawberries in center.
  • Cut into squares to serve, using spatula to remove from dish.
  • Can be made a day ahead and covered with cling wrap to seal.
Low cal, low fat & delicious spring festive dish!

Happy Easter, friends!
